Twitter has just explained the causes of — and remedies for — its multiple and massive failures over the past week.

The high number of errors and generally poor performance were reminiscent of the Great Twitter Outages of the summer of 2009. Once again, this summer’s problem has been one of scale: Twitter is growing so much and so quickly that the engineering team has been challenged when trying to keep up with the sheer volume of data going through the service’s internal network.

What happened that caused this week’s Twitter issues, wrote engineer Jean-Paul Cozzatti, is that the engineering team made three critical mistakes:

Twitter platform developers have been doing innovative work with location for some time despite having access to only a rudimentary level of API support. Most of the location-based projects we see are built using the simple, account-level location field folks can fill out as part of their profile. Since anything can be written in this field, it’s interesting but not very dependable.

We’re gearing up to launch a new feature which makes Twitter truly location-aware. A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet. Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won’t be stored for an extended period of time. However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information.

For example, with accurate, tweet-level location data you could switch from reading the tweets of accounts you follow to reading tweets from anyone in your neighborhood or city—whether you follow them or not. It’s easy to imagine how this might be interesting at an event like a concert or even something more dramatic like an earthquake. There will likely be many use cases we haven’t even thought of yet which is part of what makes this so exciting. >>>>> continue reading here.

twittley?

Twittley is first Twitter social news website made for people to discover and share content through Twitter network, by submitting links and stories, and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories.

Not clear? Here is a better explanation:
Just like Reddit, Digg or any other social bookmarking site, Twittley has categories and a front page where you vote on interesting links submitted by users. Everyone can submit a link at any time. These things don’t make Twittley special but this does: Twittley is programmed using Twitter API and because of that it has many cool features. When user votes on any of the links an automatic status update is sent on his twitter profile with a short text, link title and link url to all his followers! Imagine the power letting all Twittley users, and all Twitter followers of people who voted your link see your message!

Twittley algorithm(Karma) is another master piece! All users have Twittley karma(more votes, more submissions, how long you have an account) and Twitter karma(more followers, more active) – as higher it is you will more easily hit the Twittley front page!

Breaking Tweets

Breaking Tweets puts a spin on world news through the use of Twitter.

Founded in January 2009, the site has two main goals: 1. to help people enhance their worldview or perspective of global events; 2. to increase dialogue about international news and make the world smaller through conversation and interaction, both on this site and on Twitter.

The philosophy behind the site is “hyperlocal gone global.” There is an emphasis on what is happening in a specific place at a specific time and looks at how people are reacting to that event(s) in the area.

Tweets are manually selected by editors based on relevance and arranged to tell a story in a journalistic style. Those with pictures, videos, and/or eyewitness accounts from the scene are priority, while tweets with instant reaction to the news are also selected.

Generally, each story links to a media outlet of authority for brief background information on the news topic and for those seeking more information.

Breaking Tweets is not obsessed with “breaking the news,” there are plenty of outlets to do that, but at times, it may do so anyway based on the tweets it collects. Instead, it is interested in chronicling key news events each day, creating an archive of these events and what people are saying about them on Twitter.

It also seeks to prove the value of Twitter as both a breaking news source and journalistic platform.

How To Use Twitter: How To Get Clients With Twitter by Biana Babinsky

You have probably heard the buzz that Twitter is receiving. Many business owners are joining Twitter, but quite a few are not sure how to use Twitter and how to promote their business on Twitter in order to get results.

Lately, I have been hearing from many clients asking me how to use Twitter and how to get results on Twitter. Here are five tips for you to help you get more clients on Twitter:

- Use Twitter To Research Your Target Market. One of the biggest benefits that Twitter provides business owners is the ability to connect with your target market and hear what your target market is talking about.

One of the biggest challenges that business owners face is not knowing what they target market needs. At Twitter you are able to listen to your target market, see what kind of issues your target market is experiencing and what kind of help your target market needs.

Once you have this information, there are many things you can do with it. You can write articles and blog posts with the information that your target market needs. You can create a service based on the information you have received. You can offer a teleseminar on a topic that your target market is interested in.

By just doing your research and understanding what your target market is looking for, you are going to dramatically increase your revenues!

- Build Your List. I am sure that you know that the bigger your list, the more successful your business is. Use Twitter to build your list by sharing information about your free gift and your newsletter with your followers. Don’t promote your newsletter and your free gift all the time, but it’s perfectly fine to mention your offers from time to time.

- Build Relationships With People You Meet On Twitter. People buy from people they know, like and trust. Don’t just promote yourself all the time. Get to know your contacts and they will get to know you.

For example, on Twitter, spend 80-90% of your twits to help others, share useful content and network. Limit promotion to 10-20% of the time. When you do this, more people will follow you and more people will want to get to know you, which will translate into more subscribers over time.

- Blog And Share Your Blog Posts On Twitter. Sharing your blog posts is another great way to demonstrate your expertise to your target market. And you don’t even have to share your posts manually. There are tools that will automatically check your blog and post your blog post to Twitter automatically.

All you need to do is to set it up and your blog posts will be shared with your followers every time you have a new blog post.

- Offer Events And Teleseminars. A great way to invite more people to your list is to offer an event and invite your Twitter contacts to join you for the event.

Just set up a teleseminar on a topic that your target market is interested in and let people on Twitter know about it. You will get more teleseminar attendants that way.

Take action on at least one of these tips today and start using Twitter to build your list, get clients and promote your business!

The story so far

The explosive growth of Twitter has resulted in an amazing array of news coming from normal people – not tradition news agencies. Acadameics may call this Citizen journalism but we all know it as Tweeting

Twitter is always 1 step ahead of the traditional news service. An example is the recent Mumbai terror attacks, eyewitnesses sent an estimated 80 tweets every five seconds as the tragedy unfolded #. A printed news paper can’t compete with this level of intimate and immediate reporting.

The only problem is to find and follow the best of Twitter you have to know about Twitter, you need to have a Twitter account and need to ‘follow’ the right people to get the right news

TwitterGrep.com aim is to transform Twitters amazing news service and bring you upto the second news from the best of Twitter

There’s Something About Twitter by Daiv Russell

Why is Twitter bringing people home to roost? There must be some reason that over 3 million people have visited Twitter so far. Even some leading high-tech firms use Twitter regularly. What do all these people and companies know?

Let’s answer this question in two parts. First we will describe what Twitter is and then we will talk about how people are using this new tool. Let me explain this as a list, to make it easier to follow. Hopefully these answers will explain why people are flocking to Twitter.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is simply put a social networking site that allows you to post in messages in under 140 characters. This is sometime referred to as micro blogging.

Members of Twitter can get updates called tweets. Tweets allow members to share messages and status updates with their friends and family. You can get tweets directly from the twitter website, by signing up for an RSS feed, via text message, by email or through various other applications offered by other blogging and social networking sites.

Why Do People Use Twitter? (or as my spouse would ask, ”Why in the world do people care what you’re doing?”)

Networking: A great way to meet people. If you are in a business with a niche market, you can discover new people that have similar interests to yours.

Marketing: You need to market yourself, just like big companies such as Dell and Comcast market themselves. Whether for a big company or just for you, a strong brand is very important. You need to let the world see who you are and what you have to offer. Try marketing yourself via a social networking site like Twitter. It worked for me.

Getting Ahead on the Info Wave: On Twitter, I hear the latest info on almost any topic you care to name — before you hear it on the news. For example, the last time a big earthquake hit the Bay Area, the news was all over Twitter at least 10 minutes before CNN caught onto the fact.

It’s fun! You meet all kinds of people from all over the world. You can find someone to chat about anything and everything!

If you haven’t checked out Twitter you should absolutely take a look. It’s a very simple, straightforward site. There are many ways to “cross post” which means typing a single status message and have it show up in other social networking sites (not to mention any names).

Making Money On Twitter by RPC

What is Twitter? It’s a free social networking service that operates on a very simple premise; you ask (and answer) your network of friends, family and coworkers one ongoing simple question, “What are you doing?” They and you respond to each other, which lets you stay interconnected in real time with quick, very short answers.

Now, this might not seem like a good way to promote your business or otherwise make money, but in fact it can be. Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can make money using Twitter.

If you have a lot of followers on Twitter (meaning that a lot of people see you on Twitter), you can do both advertising and promotion to make money. That is, you can recommend a particular product or service that you sell yourself, or you can do it on behalf of advertisers who sell the product. You can also help advertisers promote a new product or service that hasn’t yet gotten a lot of play.

Affiliate marketing and sales of products or services, or selling your own products and services

Yes, you can actually do affiliate marketing within Twitter. You can do this by embedding affiliate links in your “tweets” (use a service that will shorten the URL so that it fits within your “tweet”), or use links similarly in your tweets to take them to your own website.

Doing contests

If you’ve got a business, one great way to get more traffic to your website is to run a contest on Twitter that gets you feedback about your products or services, or gives you brand awareness. You can also do this with affiliate products as well. For example, one contest might have the question, “Tell me how I can improve my product using just 140 characters.” The best answer gets a prize.

The bottom line is that because Twitter is a social networking service, you’ve got lots and lots of opportunities to earn exposure for your business. These are just some ways to get you started, but I bet you’ll think of many more on your own. Twittering can be both fun and profitable. Get creative and enjoy!

Twitter is a fast growing

Twitter is a fast growing by Bori Rozin

Twitter is a fast growing “micro-blogging” service and social network all wrapped into one. After some bumpy roads & strong growing pains the free service that allows hyper-connectedness & an interesting way to express “what you’re doing” at any given time, seems to be on the fast track now to becoming the next mega success story online.

Twitter was founded by Evan Williams, who is no rookie to bringing creative ideas to multi-million dollar reality. Evan was a blogging pioneer and has created & grown web properties that have attracted the attention of the big dogs, including Google.

One of Evan’s past web projects grew to be so huge, in fact, that Google bought him out for a multi million dollar price tag.

Rather than reclining on a beach chair & sipping Coronas for the remainder of his life, Evan decided to try his hand again, when he thought up the concept of “micro-blogging.”

In all our modern day internet hustle & bustle there’s come a need for brevity… short, to the point, yet meaningful messages.

Evan’s idea for Twitter was a service that not only allows people to post short “micro-blog” entries (by enforcing a self-created parameter that only allows users a maximum of 140 characters per post), but also helps people stay connected through the use of followers, text messages, and @replies.

The Twitter faithful are even coining their own new lingo to describe some of the everyday actions that take place on the site. “Tweets,” for example, are the term used to describe each of your short, 140 character or less, posts to update your Twitter profile.

In this article the aim is to go over a simple overview of the everyday things you’ll need to know in order to get started on Twitter & set yourself up for maximum exposure using this free service.

First off, you’ll need to go create an account by visiting the site and following the easy to follow prompts for creating a new account.

Once you’re all setup, be sure to visit the “Settings” tab and customize your profile and also enter a short bio, along with the URL to your website.

In order to double the chances of getting a click, I’d also recommend including a hyperlink within your bio, in addition to the hyperlink you’ll enter in the box for your web URL.

The next thing you’ll want to do is visit the “Devices” tab and get your account setup so that you can send tweets on the go from your mobile phone.

The steps for confirming your mobile device to work with Twitter are easy to follow and you’ll be up and rolling in no time flat.

Once you’ve got your new account created and have configured your settings & mobile, it’s time to start tweeting.

Remember, you’ll be limited to 140 characters per message so choose your words wisely. If you’d like to include a hyperlink with your Tweet you should consider shortening it down using a free tool like Tiny URL, or Snip URL.

Be careful not to come off as too spammy by including links in every Tweet… get involved with the Twitter community and share some of your daily activities with your followers so you can get a real feel for what it’s all about before sucking traffic out… its got to be a give-give relationship!

Now, to really get yourself on the fast track and start adding new followers fast, the best advice is to follow people who you find interesting, and single out those who already have a large followership. Tweet regularly and often using your mobile, the Twitter site, and even handy third party applications like “Twhirl.”

Anytime you see a new Tweet from someone you are following send them an @reply by including the “@” sign + their Twitter username in a message responding to their original tweet.

By sending users an @reply you’ll get their attention, strike up conversations, and best of all – put yourself in the public spotlight so that all of their followers will take notice of you.

Before you know it, you’ll be addicted to Twitter and will have a massive followership as well!

Once you’ve built a followership it’s easy to get visitors to your site by using services like TwitterFeed anytime you post a new blog entry, TweetLater to automatically direct message new followers, and other little known tips & tricks for putting it all on auto-pilot.

Twitter is a new revolution in communications and may be the first glimpse at Web 3.0. I recommend getting setup on Twitter today so you can ride this new wave into the future and enjoy it for all it’s worth!

Twitter – 10 Ways To KickStart your Tweets by Outsmarts

I’ve been on Twitter for almost 2 years now. At the start I was rather skeptical as to the value the medium brought especially from a business perspective: most of the “Tweets” (noun used to describe the statements people make on Twitter) were narcissistic comments made under the assumption that people were actually interested in hearing what others had for breakfast (for example).

I have watched Twitter usage evolve and today it’s much more sophisticated. Here’s a few tips for you to use to tweak your Tweets and get more out of your Twitter presence:

1. Add value – don’t just spout off about boring stuff. Nobody is interested in what color shoes you are wearing (maybe your underwear but definitely not your shoes!).

2. Share interesting stuff you’ve found on the web that relates to your business or area of interest.

3. Use TinyURL or a similar url abbreviation tool to shorten the length of url links in your Twitter posts so they fit in the 140 character limit.

4. Look at Twitter as a forum to let followers know what it is you do for a living – you never know who might read and say I need someone to do just that for me.

5. Don’t spam or sell.

6. If someone starts following you don’t automatically add them and follow (don’t be a sheeple) – take a look at the number of followers they have compared to their following. If they are following way more people than they have followers then it might be best to avoid them – chances are they are only looking to follow so that they can in turn spam you.

7. Don’t let Twitter suck up too much of your time – it can be very distracting.

8. Limit the number of people you follow to avoid Twitter overload.

9. Use Twitterfeed to feed your blog to Twitter.

10. Use Tweetscan to monitor whats being said about you or your company on Twitter.

To retrieve your address book, click on the ‘My AddressBook’ sublink: your contacts will be displayed in a ‘Stream’ stack or in the Gallery.

Reports is a set of specific sorting and filtering stacks, providing data hard to find with normal searches. Check out your Recent followers or your VIP list.

Eg: Find out or which of your Linkedin Friends are on Twitter

When you enter your log-in ID, PeopleBrowsr finds your friends from that social network. But you can also see other friends from heaps of other sites. To see these friends:

    • Click on ‘Accounts’ on the page’s footer
    • Select and add your other accounts
    • You will see all your friends from the accounts that you add
    • Your profiles will be linked and the data you uploaded on different networks will be gathered
