Can Twitter Teach our Kids Math? by Doyle

Well at this stage twitter is becoming mainstream. We have to accept twitter is probably going to be here to stay. I posed the question “Can Twitter Teach our Kids Math?” which is a bit of a stretch but I believe it can definitely help.

Twitter to the uninitiated is a simple SMS-like messaging service that allows people to connect and follow the messages posted by people and companys and in turn post (or Tweet) their own status. It is used in a few different ways but mainly by people who just want to keep in touch with people and organisations.

Sounds simple and it really is that simple there is a little bit more to it but basically not much more. But let’s see if we can come up with a scenario where twitter could be used in an educational situation. Imagine if all the students “followed” the teacher on twitter and could get updates and homework tips and results and personal mentoring all on twitter, it’d be a bit cool right? Imagine too if the parents could also follow the school and get updates on school closures and events and their kids progress, again cool right? This would be a super easy way to stay up-to date with what is happening in school and best of all it’s free to everyone concerned. Not particularly innovative just quick and easy movement of information.

Twitter could be great as a communications service in school as described above but it still doesn’t teach our kids. Well we could also offer anonymous free tutor help. I’m actually surprised a service like this doesn’t already exist (well I can’t find one) that allows a person tweet a specific problem to a service and get back an instant-ish response, not sure how the business model would work but hey twitter hasn’t figured one out yet either. Or how about a twitter service where people can post up homework help and advice again surprised the book publishers haven’t cottoned on to this one yet either.

Everyone knows that education is delivered and received by talking and reading well twitter is just a new method of communication and can easily then be included into the mix of education successfully and will succeed and fail in the exact same way as all communication does now. If it succeeds just remember where you heard it first, if it fails blame twitter ;-)

Twitter trends began as a way to shed light on popular conversations. It’s interesting to know that one topic can now spread across the world in real-time, and Trends help us discover which of those topics are paramount on a global scale.

As Twitter evolves, and more people share what’s happening in their own world, we want to provide another way for people to discover topics that may be relevant to them. Last week we began to slowly roll out a new feature called Local Trends to expose what people are talking about on the state and city level, and today we’ve fully launched so everyone can use it.
The big events that come up around the world will always become a global conversation, but what about the big events that only happen in your world that only matter to those around you? Or the slight differences in the way Californians perceive an event, like Obama’s election victory, versus those São Paulo, Brazil?

Local Trends will allow you to learn more about the nuances in our world and discover even more relevant topics that might matter to you. We’ll be improving this feature over time to provide more locations, languages, and data through our API.

The Power of Suggestions

January 21, 2010 twitter Comments

Twitter Blog Posted by @joshelman

Hi, I’m Josh and I work in the product team at Twitter. One of the areas I’m working on is helping new users get started so they know how to find and discover what interests them. Today we’re making the first of many changes here to help people ease into the twitterverse by finding and following accounts that interest them.

Two of the biggest challenges for new users have been finding accounts to follow that appeal to their interests, and finding their friends and colleagues who tweet. Over time, we’ve learned that by making suggestions of who to follow, we can help users get going more easily on Twitter. In our new design, we’re taking some steps to continue to improve this process. Once a user signs up and selects what they’re interested in, we show them some accounts that relate to that interest. Next, we help them find their friends and colleagues by checking their address books, and third we give them a chance to search for anyone we or they missed in this process.

We’ve found that the power of suggestion can be a great thing to help people get started, but it’s important that we suggest things relevant to them. We’ve created a number of algorithms to identify users across a variety of clusters who tweet actively and are engaged with their audiences. These new algorithms help us group these active users into lists of users by interests. Rather than suggesting a random set of 20 users for a new user to follow, now we let users browse into the areas they are interested in and choose who they want to follow from these lists. These lists will be refreshed frequently as the algorithms identify new users who should be suggested in these lists and some that are not as engaging to new users will be removed. We also have a set of “Staff Picks” that are manually selected by Twitter employees as some of our favorites. Given the recent tragedy in Haiti, we’ve also created a special “Staff Picks for Haiti” to get updated news and content on what’s happening there.

We’re really excited about this change, and look forward to continually improving the experience for all users to discover the best content and get the most out of Twitter.

Introducing Seesmic Look

Is a unique way to learn, observe or be immersed in the real-time web. A Windows desktop app bringing together Twitter data with a beautiful design, approachability and ease of use, Look delivers a rich, cinematic experience.

At Seesmic, we work very hard to reach our vision to help users manage their presence online, and we try our best to make Seesmic available on every screen and touch every social network.
Now, we felt it was time to challenge ourselves and make something truly special.

We took an unusual route and shifted paradigms to develop something no one has done before. We were challenged to reach out to an untapped market – a mainstream audience not familiar with Twitter – people in your personal circle like friends or family members (think “Mom” or “Dad”), that heard of Twitter but were never interested, or never had the opportunity to have a positive and friendly experience.

To accomplish this, it was important for us to:

  1. Offer a fantastic browsing experience, with a visually pleasing and easy to use interface. More importantly, you don’t even have to log in to Twitter to experience it!
  2. Organize it in a way for users to quickly recognize and connect to their specific interests – be it people or brands – like popular TV shows or companies, celebrities in sports or entertainment, or even leading authorities in news or politics.
  3. Make available a specific place (a sandlot or plot) where brand channels can connect with their interested audience and offer something more special than what you would normally find when just connected through Twitter.

As such, we are extremely excited to announce a new product that will open the eyes to new users and change the experience of viewing Twitter in real time. This innovative application provides a visually rich and engaging way for users to keep track of the people, topics, news and brands from one of the most popular social networks in Twitter.

Twidiko is the easiest way to post videos to Twitter.
Twidiko allows you to share videos on Twitter. You can use your webcam and microphone and share your short videos and voice messages via Twitter easily just by using Twidiko. The user interface resembles Twitter a fair bit. Moreover, like in Twitter, you are limited by the length of a message you can record, it is 14 seconds only but it’s pretty enough for a well composed and informative message, which actually isn’t always needed to be full of seriousness.
We mentioned voice messages, and indeed, if you don’t have a webcam or just want not to be shown, you still can use Twidiko! Simply turn off your camera in the recording widget and you still have 14 seconds to say something to the world or to your friends.

Sharing music on Twitter is nothing new, but it sure is fun and easy. If you haven’t done it before, now you will have a chance to do it since Twtmuzik is a new resource that serves that very same function, and it does so admirably well.  What you must understand is that this platform is intended for sharing your own music. That is, it is a tool for self-promotion and not for the upload and distribution of commercial music that belongs to someone else, or that is being played on the radio.  In order to use Twtmuzik, all you need is having a Twitter account to sign in and upload your own music. Once a song has been uploaded, your followers will be notified via a tweet. This tweet will include a link to your new song, and other people can retweet it and start spreading it around the social web.

With Tagnic, you can give and get +tags to and from anyone — anywhere you tweet.

The concept that lies at the heart of this site is as simple to apprehend as it is easy to be enjoyed. In essence, Tagnic is nothing but the result of applying tags to people when tweeting. Think of it as hashtags for people and you will be 100 % on target.  The way these tags are added is quite straightforward, as you simply add a plus sign “+” and the corresponding adjective at the end of the tweet. Upon doing so, the tag will be added to that person’s Tagnic profile. When certain tags end up being combined, the person will receive a badge, too. In a certain sense, it is all a big game. But it is a game that has a serious side to it, too, as the ones who take part of it will have a better chance to get to know each other as people.  Some of the featured badges include “Rockstar”, “Book Worm”, “Top Chef”… I guess you get the idea. Again, it is all really simple and easy to get to grips with, not to mention quite enjoyable. Those to whom a lot of followers mean nothing and who place the real value of social interaction on the actual depth of the relationships might end up flocking to it.

Twitter opens up a huge opportunity for self-expression, and part of that is undoubtedly visual. While the Twitter interface gives you some basic backgrounds, let’s face it: they’re mostly pretty dull and it’s hard to make a unique splash when hundreds of thousands of other people are using the same elements. To get noticed not just for your tweets, but also for your style, try creating your own custom background. In this second of a two-part part series, I’ll discuss how to create a tiled (or patterned) background. In Part 1 yesterday, I talked about how to create top-left graphics that used image masks to blend seamlessly into the background. This time, I’ll explore tiled (or patterned) backgrounds. And although this tutorial is crafted for Twitter, you can use the pattern you create here just about anywhere, including your personal blog or your company Website.

Designing For Twitter

A simple, stylish pattern can add polish to your page, and people tend to associate you with the imagery you choose. Tiling a grainy picture of your cat across your page will probably not earn you many followers. A cute pattern of cartoony cats carries the same message—that you’re keen on kitties—without suggesting that you’re a hopeless novice.

Coming up with a killer pattern is your goal. Make your pattern moderately large (300-by-300 pixels or more) to help curb the obviousness of the repetition. Avoid gradients because they will not blend from tile to tile. And you’ll want to keep the color and contrast of your pattern in check; after all, people are there to read your tweets, not go blind.

Open Adobe Photoshop CS3 or CS4 and choose File -> New. Enter a width and height for your pattern; for this example, I’ll choose 400-by-400 at 72 pixels per inch. There is no requirement to construct a square pattern; if you think your concept will work better with a wide or tall pattern, enter a resolution like 600-by-300 or 200-by-800. (Twitter’s only requirement is that the overall image file size be less than 800k.) Click OK to continue.

Create a moderately sized pattern of at least 300-by-300 pixels or larger.

Locate the Layers palette (Window -> Layers) and keep it handy, as you’ll be using it often. The first task is to set the pattern background color. Choose Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Solid Color. Enter a name for the color layer (i.e., Background Color) and click OK. Now choose a color from the Color Picker and click OK; a new layer will then appear in the Layers palette.(Remember that you can change your background color at any time by double-clicking the color layer thumbnail.) >>>> Continue Reading here

Twitter Blog, By: @Abdur

My name is Abdur and I’m part of the Research team here at Twitter. As Chief Scientist, it’s my job to interpret data so we can understand and appreciate how Twitter is constantly evolving. Since it’s the end of the year, we thought it would be interesting to review the topics and issues that captured global attention over the year. In 2009, Twitter’s Trending Topics helped us understand what was happening around the world showing us that people everywhere can be united in concern around important events; excited about a new movie; or geek-out about a major new technology.

Among all the keywords, hashtags, and phrases that proliferated throughout the year, one topic surfaced repeatedly. Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year. The terms #iranelection, Iran and Tehran were all in the top-21 of Trending Topics, and #iranelection finished in a close second behind the regular weekly favorite #musicmonday.

These are Twitter’s top Trending Topics across several categories—an interesting time capsule of what was happening as this decade came to a close.
